Hawaiian Kona Extra Fancy

If you like your coffee “Made in America,” Armeno Coffee Roasters’ Hawaiian Kona Extra Fancy is an outstanding choice.

Kona coffee comes from the rich volcanic soils of the Hualalai and Mauna Loa volcanoes on the Big Island of Hawaii. The entire Kona region is an area encompassing approximately 2000 acres – two miles across and twenty miles long. Most of the Kona coffee crop is produced on small estates, and only about 2 million pounds of green coffee is produced annually. That makes Kona coffee relatively rare and somewhat more expensive than some of our other coffees, but it is definitely worth it.

Why ‘Extra Fancy?’

Extra Fancy refers to the grade of Kona coffee, and is determined by the size of the bean, defects, color, and appearance. The beans in the Extra Fancy grade – the highest grade of Kona coffee – are 19/64th or larger. Each coffee fruit, the cherry, is picked at the height of ripeness. The skin and membrane of the cherry are removed and these ‘pulped’ beans are spread out on a drying deck to be sun dried. After being milled and graded, the processed coffee beans are bagged and shipped to roasters like Armeno’s, so that we can roast the beans to order and ship them fresh to you.

Drying Kona Coffee

Armeno coffee roaster, John Parks, roasts Kona coffee to a full city roast. The cup is smooth and mild with a creamy texture. Kona coffee has a floral aroma and a slight chocolate aftertaste. Flowers and chocolate in an Extra Fancy coffee make Armeno Coffee Roasters‘ Hawaiian Kona Extra Fancy the perfect choice for an intimate Valentines Day setting, or perhaps a gift for your coffee loving valentine.
